The teen thriller series is based on the popular book series of the same name written by Holly Jackson, meaning that any sort of adaptation was going to be viewed with a much more critical eye than if it were a Netflix original series.

The series follows Pip, a teenager who decides to investigate a murder case that has been plaguing her and her town for years. Five years ago, Andie Bell was murdered and her boyfriend Sal Singh confessed to the murder. Everyone in town thought the case was closed, although Andie's body was never found.

But Pip isn't so sure, so she decides to dig deeper and uncovers a plethora of secrets that might have been better left hidden—especially when Andie's real killer starts doing everything he can to make sure Pip never finds out the truth. But one question that remains is: Is Barney the dog dead in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder?

It is clear that Barney died as a result of the murder, making Pip even more determined to solve the case and unmask the killer. She eventually discovers that the person who sent her threatening text messages and kidnapped Barney is Andie Bell's sister, Becca. She had previously asked Pip why she was so determined to find Andie's killer.

However, since they had no other interactions, Pip didn't even consider Becca a suspect, despite being the last one to see Andie alive. 

In the series, Barney's death is not acknowledged, but the book on which the series is based better explains how things happened. Becca Bell kidnaps Barney in an attempt to scare Pip into stopping her investigation. 

In the book, she is more thorough and forces Pip to reveal her entire research and destroy it. When Pip does as she is told, Becca lets Barney go , believing that the dog will eventually find his way home. However, the dog is found dead.

Becca thinks that the dog may have wandered off and drowned in the creek during the night. She feels bad, but there was nothing she could have done. The story takes a new turn in the rest of the book, where it is revealed that Barney's death was not an accident. Becca and Andie's father, Jason Bell, killed Barney , but his intentions were completely different, as he didn't even know that it was Pip's dog .

Things play out a little differently in the series, as Barney is found outside Pip's house, and the circumstances of his death are not discussed. It is implied that Becca was his kidnapper, but the exact nature of his death remains elusive.
